Tomato Chapathi

My chitti makes tomato poori. She infact advised me to make these kind of pooris for my girls. I tried this tomato Chapathi very long back and managed to find time to post this recipe. Here goes the recipe.

Ingredients:-
  1. wheat flour - 3 cups
  2. salt to taste
  3. sesame oil -  2tsp
  4. Tomato - 2 Medium sized
  5. Green chillies - 2 (acc to taste)
  6. omam/ajwain - a pinch
First boil the 1/2 cup water. Put the two tomatoes in it and let it boil for few minutes. Let it cool and peel the skin.  Now take those tomatoes, green chillies and salt and grind it into a fine paste without adding water. The paste will be watery by itself. Now take the wheat flour in a wide bowl, add the tomato paste, omam and mix everything well and knead it into a fine dough.  Sprinkle water if necessary. Make lemon sized balls and spread it into 8 or 9" diameter circle.  Cook it in a hot tawa. Enjoy it with a dallop of yogurt or any of your favorite side dish.

Oats chapathi & Mint chapathi

I have never tried roti/chapathi with oats. One of my friend from the kids' school told me about this oats chapathi and I wanted to try this today. She wanted me to try this adding more oats than wheat. Since I wasn't sure whether it will wor, i just tried with more wheat and a part of oats....Here is the recipe I followed..

Ingredients:-
  1. Wheat flour - 1 cup
  2. oats powder - 4 tbsp (grind quaker oats into a fine powder)
  3. salt to taste
  4. Water to knead
  5. Sesame oil - 1 tsp

Mix wheat and oats flour, add salt and knead the flour into a nice dough. Spread the sesame oil and leave the dough for atleast half an hour. When you are ready to make roti, take required amount of dough to make one roti and spread it into a circle shaped roti of 7" diameter. Cook it on both sides and enjoy. Surprisingly, it was really good. This is the first time, I am trying roti with oats. Since my husband stopped eating oats, I have a whole bunch of oats in my pantry, and now I can use them for making rotis...

I also made one more flavor roti. I first made two small rotis for my girls using the dough and I used some leftover Mint thogayal to the remaining dough. I used two teaspoons of thogayal with the remaining dough and made chapathis with that. It tastes new to me cos this is the first time I am trying chapathi with mint leaves.

Kids Friendly Chapathi 2

I got a wonderful response for the first kids friendly chapathi I made, from my girls and of course from my buddy bloggers. This is a little more addition to the previous one cos my patti wanted me to give paruppu saadam to my girls without fail and they hate to eat it now a days. Here is the recipe I tried yesterday and my kids love it.

Ingredients:-
  1. Ingredients:-
  2. Wheat flour - 1 small cup
  3. Salt - a pinch
  4. Sesame oil - 1 tsp
  5. Potato - 1 (if it is small or 1/2 if it is big)
  6. Carrot - 2 ( I used baby carrots)
  7. Raddish - a small piece
  8. Green peas - 2 tbsp
  9. Toor dhall - 2 tbsp (cooked)
Cook all the vegetable and cook the toor dhall separately. Let it cool for sometime. Now mash everything nicely ( I mashed it in my mixie). Now add it to the wheat flour, add salt and make a dough out of it. You may not need water to make it a soft dought. If needed, just sprinkle a little bit of water. Make small balls out of the dough and make small chapathis. Cook it till its soft. Serve it hot adding a teaspoon of ghee on both sides, with tomato sauce. My kids love it and most of all they are consuming vegetables, dhall at one time.

Kids friendly Chapathi & Awards!

My girls are very picky eaters and I have to think something or the other to make them eat veggies and now a days, I have to pack their lunch box. This is something which is shared by one of my aunt. I tried this with my girls' and they are eating this chapathi really well. Best part of this chapathi is, it is filled with veggies. The quantity I have used here is very less. Increase the quantity accordingly.

Ingredients:-
  1. Wheat flour - 1 small cup
  2. Salt - a pinch
  3. Sesame oil - 1 tsp
  4. Potato - 1 (if it is small or 1/2 if it is big)
  5. Carrot - 2 ( I used baby carrots)
  6. Raddish - a small piece

First pressure cook potato, carrot and raddish. Mash the veggies and add it to the wheat flour, add salt, sesame oil and required amount of water and make it soft dough like chapathi dough. Here we don't have to add more water, since the water in veggies will help us to knead the dough soft. Keep it aside for 10 mts. Make small chapathis ( I use small yogurt box lid size) and cook it on hot stove. Serve it hot to kids adding a teaspoon of melted ghee on top of it. Tomato ketchup can be a good sidedish.

Chapathi

Making soft chapathis is an art. My MIL is an expert in making soft chapathis. I am not there yet. So this recipe is from my MIL. Here is the recipe for making chapathi.

Ingredients:-
  1. Wheat Flour - 3 cups
  2. Water - required amount to make the dough
  3. Salt - a pinch
  4. Sesame Oil - 1 tsp
First add salt to wheat flour. Add water gradually and mix the flour to make a soft dough. Apply oil on top of the dough and cover it and keep it aside for an hour. Make the dough into small balls. Spread the dough into circles (choose the size. I make small chapatis, my MIL makes big ones). Cook the chapatis on hot tava. Flip it when one side is half cooked. Spread a teaspoon of ghee (optional) on top of it and enjoy it with a good bhaji.
